What a Weekend in Gwinn: Celebrating Community, Tradition, and Local Tourism!
This past weekend was a powerful reminder of what makes Forsyth Township such a special place to live, work, and visit. From the excitement of the Great Lakes Rodeo to the family-friendly fun of Gwinn Fun Daze, our community was filled with energy, visitors, and opportunities to come together and celebrate everything that makes our area unique.
Throughout the weekend, residents and visitors enjoyed rodeo performances, food vendors, local businesses, games, a community parade, family activities, and countless opportunities to connect with neighbors and friends. Whether you were cheering from the stands at the rodeo, browsing vendor booths, watching the parade, or simply enjoying the atmosphere around town. There was no shortage of things to see and do here in Gwinn, Michigan!
What many people may not realize is that both of these events represent much more than a weekend of fun and entertainment.
The Great Lakes Rodeo has a long history of supporting local communities. Originally founded in 2006 as the Sawyer Stampede, the event was created to help finance the recreation center located on the former KI Sawyer Air Force Base. As the event grew in popularity, it eventually outgrew its original location and moved to the Marquette County Fairgrounds. Along with the move came a new name, the Great Lakes Rodeo.
Following a pause in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rodeo returned stronger than ever in 2021 and found a new home in the heart of Gwinn. Today, the event continues to attract visitors from across the Upper Peninsula and beyond while supporting an important mission. Funds raised through the Great Lakes Rodeo are used to provide grants for youth programs throughout Marquette County, helping create opportunities and experiences for young people across the region.
At the same time, the Gwinn Lions Club once again brought the community together through its annual Fun Daze celebration. The Lions Club has been serving the Gwinn area since 1952 and has played an important role in supporting local initiatives throughout its history. From helping establish ambulance services and supporting healthcare access in the community to providing vision assistance and responding to local needs. The Gwinn Lions Club has spent decades investing in the people of Gwinn.
That spirit of service was evident throughout Fun Daze. The parade, games, vendors, and activities created opportunities for residents of all ages to gather, celebrate, and enjoy time together. Events like Fun Daze remind us that strong communities are built through volunteerism, service, and the dedication of people who care deeply about their hometown.
Beyond the fun, weekends like this highlight the importance of local tourism and community events. Together, these celebrations brought hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors to Forsyth Township. Those visitors supported local restaurants, stores, lodging providers, gas stations, vendors, and community organizations. While experiencing everything our town has to offer.
Tourism is often thought of as something that happens in larger destinations, but community events play a significant role in driving economic activity in rural communities like ours. Every visitor who stops for a meal, shops locally, fills up their gas tank. Or spends the weekend exploring contributes to our local economy. Just as importantly, these events introduce new people to our community and encourage them to return in the future.
At Forsyth Forward, we believe that supporting and promoting events like these is an important part of strengthening our community. Local events create opportunities for economic growth, encourage community pride, support local organizations, and showcase the many reasons people choose to live, work, and visit Forsyth Township.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Great Lakes Rodeo, the Gwinn Lions Club, the countless volunteers, sponsors, vendors, organizers, and attendees who helped make this weekend such a success for our town. Their dedication and commitment continue to make our community a welcoming place.
Weekends like this remind us that when communities invest in traditions everyone benefits. We are proud to celebrate the people and organizations who make these things possible and look forward to many more years of community fun, connection, and growth in Forsyth Township!
