A Quick Guide to Resetting Your Home Mid-Spring

It’s hard to believe, but spring is already halfway over and summer is right around the corner. Even if the weather hasn’t quite caught up, this is a great time to reset your space. A little spring cleaning and preparation can go a long way in helping you feel more refreshed, focused, and ready for the season ahead. Whether you love a good deep clean or are just getting started, here are a few simple tasks to check off before summer arrives.

Indoors

The first area to refresh is the indoors, starting with decluttering. Go through your winter clothes, shoes, and accessories and donate or sell anything that you didn’t use. For the items you are keeping, find a good place to store them away. Once those are out of sight, address the clothing you are left with. Are there any staple items you’d like to have for the summer? Some clothing items that are great for late spring/early summer are linen pants, cotton tanks that you can layer with cardigans, and a good jean jacket.

After you’ve lightened your load, give a deep clean to the main areas of your home. Vacuuming the carpet, mopping the floors, and washing the windows can help remove some dust buildup (and you’ll notice yourself breathing better!). For bonus points, keep your windows open for at least a few minutes every day to improve your air quality. In the bedroom, switch out bed linens to more breathable fabric like linen or cotton percale for the summertime. The last thing you want to do inside is perform safety checks. Although tedious, check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Also, give your dryer vents and HVAC systems a good clean while you’re at it.

Outdoors

Now it’s time to tackle the exterior of the home. If gardening isn’t your thing, feel free to skip to the next paragraph. For those of you who garden or are looking to start one, begin with cleaning up any debris and dead plants from the previous season while also checking the soil pH and nutrient levels. Loosening the soil and adding organic matter will prepare you to plant. The best things to grow in the U.P. in early May include crops that tolerate lingering cold and frost. Some veggies like peas, spinach, lettuce, and carrots or fruits like strawberries are great options.

There are only a few more tasks left for the outdoors and then you’re done! Creating a cozy outdoor space is a great way to set up for the summer. Assess your current patio furniture situation and see if there are any upgrades you can make. If you have nothing, just getting a couple of chairs to place outside can be super helpful because spending time outdoors is so important. Taking a look at your outdoor gear will also help you determine if you need anything new for the summer. Inspect your bikes, hiking gear, and camping supplies. For even more preparedness, create a grab and go bag for any trips you have planned. Keeping a small grab-and-go backpack stocked with essentials means you can head out without overthinking it.

Intention > Perfection

You have made it to the end of the guide! Don’t let this list overwhelm youstart with one area and set a 30-minute timer. As you work through it, you’ll start to feel that fresh, reset energy.
